Morning chaps. Working the late shift is all kinds of awesome. Woke up without the usual blind “ah crap I”™m late” panic, managed to grab some breakfast and a coffee (a rarity, let me tell you), had a play with the kitties and listened to some music before coming to work. Bliss. Downside? I”™m stuck here until 7pm tonight. You win some, you lose some.

I don”™t know about you but the daily grind can really get me down. I love this song for the way in which it reminds me that life is life. There isn”™t a do over option and there”™s no such thing as not really living so enjoy it. That goes for if its kissing a beautiful girl or crying your heart out. These emotional aspects remind you that your living so chin up and keep on going.

Johnny Cash ”“ Solitary Man.
It”™s the man in black which is a great start and also it a great “I”™ve been alone for so long” anthem. Everything in its time and until then me and Johnny will keep singing along.

Kanye West ”“ Jesus Walks
Don”™t really have a story for this one. Just one of the first tracks I bought on itunes so got muchos plays on the system before I had a chance to add more music.

She Wants Revenge ”“ Tear You Apart
This is a bit of a cheat. I actually wanted to put on a mash up of Tear you apart and Love will tear us apart by A + D. (Strongly recommend A + D for some quality mash ups) but quelle surprise Spotify doesn”™t have it. So I went for the lesser known track and bunged it on here.

Malcolm Middleton ”“ We”™re All Going To Die
A failed Christmas number one campaign a few years back brought this to my attention. Its vein of black humour appealed to me as did the tune.

Sigur Ros ”“ Gobbledigook
On my to do list is hearing these guys play in the open air surrounded by snow as the Aurora Borealis lights up the sky. Failing that listening to them on my ipod is pretty good too. This one is up here as I listened to it almost daily for the entire time I worked in a cafÃ© in Sheffield as I tried to find a better job. It infectious la-la-laing made the tram ride not seem so bad.

Happy clappy chappies to make you feel good. It makes it seem like the sun is shining even on those days when the clouds are there and its chucking down cats and dogs

The Cinematic Underground ”“ My Dear Self
A haunting melody and lyrics about the necessity for human interaction and companionship. Love how it ties into the down feelings when feeling alone. And on a juvenile level the masturbation joke towards the end is good too.

Pixies ”“ Where Is My Mind?
The closing track to one of the best films ever. A cutting satire on the nature of manhood in the modern world or an excuse for Brad Pitt to punch people in the face? You decide. Would have also loved to have had the “This is your life” track from the soundtrack too. About the fleeting nature of existence and how it all ending. For some reason it cheers me up but doesn”™t motivate me to do much.

Again no story. I just like it.

Talking Heads ”“ Once In A Lifetime
I remember hearing this at some point as a youngster but for the life of me can”™t remember where. I wasn”™t until about the age of 18 I managed to find out what that part remembered song lurking at the back of my head was and for it to become a fine favourite. Again another song about life and what it chucks at you. Hmm maybe this is a themed list after all.

Los Campesinos! ”“ You! Me! Dancing!
I listened to this album on repeat whilst writing my dissertation. This was great for a break at 3am in a little study room in the library. Put it on, bop about a bit and then go back to staring at a screen not really knowing about what your talking about. Ahh Good times.

Rage Against The Machine ”“ Killing In The Name
Great for angry dancing in the basement at Bradford University. Get all those anti social tendencies out in a safe manner then go back to being a more pleasant human without actually telling people to F. Off.

Modest Mouse ”“ The Good Times Are Killing Me
Let”™s just say that I do have a hedonistic side and leave it at that.

The Undertones ”“ Teenage Kicks
If John Peel(God Bless his soul) rates it then its at least worth a moment of your time. It harks back to teenage years even if your teenage years weren”™t as cool as the song makes them sound, as mine surely weren”™t.

Blur ”“ Song 2
Another good jump around the room song.

The Killers ”“ Mr. Brightside
This is great for belting out on a dancefloor and having a good old sing along to in the car. No deeper reason than that.

The Knife ”“ Heartbeats
I want to say Jose Mourinho released a cover of this a few years back but have a feeling that I”™m slightly confused there [Editor”™s note: It was on the album “The Special One Sings The Blues”, I think – Dave]. As much as I love covers its always good to go back to the original every so often.

London Symphony Orchestra ”“ The Planets, Op. 32: I. Mars, The Bringer Of War
We can all thank my dad for this choice. He had this on tape back when I was a wee lad and I”™ve loved it ever since. The bombast and driving rhythm behind it are just engrossing and captivating. The whole suite is brilliant but this is my favourite part of it all.

LCD Soundsystem ”“ All my Friends
Another good track to remind you of the good times when you”™re mates are far away.

System Of A Down ”“ B.Y.O.B.
Shouting sing along action again.

Bloc Party ”“ Flux
Again no real story

I love the multi layering of the sound in this track and also the idea of Bowie fleeing screaming every time an American pops their head around the door.

You may know this from a little film called “The Matrix” but Rod Dougan”™s whole album is worth checking out.

Antony & The Johnsons ”“ Hope There”™s Someone
Hauntingly beautiful song which builds and builds until it explodes towards the end. I think this is another one from the early days of Itunes and I loved it so much I bought the album too. Album not as good but still worth a listen.

Not sure why this is here. Still a catchy song

London Music Works ”“ 28 Days Later – In The House-In A Heartbeat
This song does seem to have its own heartbeat and after hearing it in the background of various adverts and trailers I tracked it down and am always willing to be swept away by it.

A less shouty sing along one here. I want to describe the pum ta pum pum beat as one of the things I like about this but don”™t think that is going to translate. Feel free to ignore that bit.

Another driving beat behind this one. Its got the feeling of hanging out with your mates shooting the breeze and ragging on each other whenever you can.

Happy Monday, proles. I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend, I know I did. The best, in fact. I”™m so goddamn lucky it hurts. But enough of that right now, we”™re here for the music.

Do you know, I”™ve waited so long to get this mix up. I really have. Today is the perfect day to run it. A sunny Monday. Looking at the playlist, it is going to kick the mundane right out of Monday and make you music so hard your fingernails grow an inch. Yes, I just used “music” as a verb. Now, I will leave you in the plesant company of the living legend that is, Rikki M. Hill, esq.

Fear ye not, the weekend is a scant 5 days away.

Hi Everyone,

I”™m Rik and I know a few of the lads through school (Thom, Neil and JB) we spent most of our 6 years together either accusing each other of being gay in increasingly creative ways or saving up spit for an entire double English lesson then smashing two full cheeks worth of saliva all over each other”™s blazers. We were also rather fond of swearing all over our exercise books with phrases such as “Suck my fat willy ladies” or “Good evening. Would you like to see my ball bag?” Quite simply, time very well spent. [Editors note: I also remember the phrase “I”™ll have a big bulls willy and chips, please” was scrawled on Rik”™s pencil case during a particularly frantic Business Studies lesson – Thom].

We also spent a lot of time listening to music, watching late night Eurotrash and pissing about with computers. Whilst Thom and Neil put these skills to good use and went into computers, I went to uni and spent most of my time sleeping and wanking before getting my old DIY store job back after I ran out of money in 6 months (Dont worry I eventually got a proper job, i.e. one that destroys my soul every minute I”™m there”¦.) Again music”™s been a constant and people no matter how rough things get, listen to a few tracks you dig and I guarantee you wont feel as bad.

So here”™s my random playlist of bands I like or unloved classics (I couldn”™t resist putting Journey in there purely because its the end credits for the Larry Burns episode of the Simpsons and sums up the end to almost all of the shite 80”™s films i love). Enjoy my lovely little sluts.

All I”™ll say is that I”™m not 100% happy with the first few tracks of the playlist, and given more time I”™d have changed them. Stick with it, though, as it gets much much better.

Yes, I”™m back to life due to the miracles of music, sunshine, nano-machines and a cyborg exoskeleton. Before I forget, make sure you come down to The Cheltenham Underground this Friday (I believe it”™s the 16th) to check out New Rising; Phil King and Men Diamler. Those of you who have spoken to me for more than 5 minutes know I hold Men Diamler as the benchmark for live performances. You simply have to check him out before you die. In addition to him you”™ll get another two bands of awesome to watch, listen and tap your toes to. So make sure you go. Right, I”™m still not feeling 100% so less of the jabber from me and more of the wobble from Fozz. Go!

It seems that Dave and Thom rather enjoyed my first playlist, so I now have the challenge of emulating that and coming up with another one that doesn”™t disappoint. This time round I thought I”™d get some inspiration from the bands/artists that I”™ve had the privilege of seeing live in concert over the last year or so.

What better way to begin than with my latest outing to see Four Tet, with support from Nathan Fake. Wowzers, what a combo! From Four Tet”™s new album we have “Love Cry”, which starts off fairly stark and empty, but over the course of the track more and more elements are added and it gradually metamorphoses into a cacophony of aural bliss. The experimental qualities of these first two tracks are the perfect set-up for more of the same in the next track, which comes in the form of “Shrimp” by Mr Scruff. I had the pleasure of seeing Scruff with Dave, and the large alcohol intake that ensued made sure our knees were certainly wobbling by the end of the night!

Strictly speaking, I haven”™t seen Soulwax. However, I have seen them under the guise of 2 Many DJs, and what an audio-visual feast that was. Spotify currently doesn”™t contain any of their work (which really needs to be rectified) so I decided to go with the Soulwax “Too Many DJs” track instead.

Supporting Lykke Li was Yoav, an Israeli guy armed with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and a couple of effects pedals, yet he was able to cleverly concoct some pretty funky electronica-style beats. I thoroughly enjoyed his set, and then he went and pulled this doozy of a track out of the bag as the finale ”“ a chilling and vacuous rendition of “Where Is My Mind?” by The Pixies that will send a shiver down your spine.

I love Zero 7, I really do, and I had high hopes when I went to see them live. Sadly, they just didn”™t live up to my expectations, and I would probably go as far as to say it was one of the most disappointing gigs I”™ve been to. A lot of the stuff they played was off “Yeah Ghost”, which I hadn”™t heard at the time, but even the older stuff that I did recognise they somehow seemed to butcher. It may have been better if Sia had been able to join them, but alas she was off touring elsewhere. Anyways, enough of my grievances, have a listen to “This Fine Social Scene”.

Speaking of fine social scenes, how about some of the broken variety? (Do you see what I did there?) OK, so I tell a lie, I haven”™t actually seen Broken Social Scene live yet, but after bagging some tickets to see them in June I just couldn”™t resist throwing this cheeky little number into the mix in anticipation.

La Roux, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club and The Whip have all had releases on the Kitsune label so it kinda made sense to bundle them together. After seeing La Roux before she became popular I don”™t really understand how she managed to get so famous. I don”™t think she can sing very well at all, but there are some pretty good remixes of her stuff floating around.

I love going to gigs where the support act turns out to be equally as good as, if not better, than the main headliner. Electro-geeks Errors and Filthy Dukes, who were supporting Forward Russia and Secret Machines respectively, are both prime examples of this. Errors kicked off the gig with “Mr. Milk” to a virtually empty crowd, but people soon started to gather once they realised the musical treats emanating from the stage. And Forward Russia were very entertaining as well. The lead singer is completely and utterly mental, and was literally swinging from the rafters at one point.

So that”™s pretty much it for this one. There was a lot more I wanted to include but I”™ll probably save them for future playlists.

After seeing La Roux before she became popular I don”™t really understand how she managed to get so famous. I don”™t think she can sing very well at all, but there are some pretty good remixes of her stuff floating around.

I love going to gigs where the support act turns out to be equally as good as, if not better, than the main headliner. Electro-geeks Errors and Filthy Dukes, who were supporting Forward Russia and Secret Machines respectively, are both prime examples of this. Errors kicked off the gig with “Mr. Milk” to a virtually empty crowd, but people soon started to gather once they realised the musical treats emanating from the stage. And Forward Russia were very entertaining as well. The lead singer is completely and utterly mental, and was literally swinging from the rafters at one point.

So that”™s pretty much it for this one. There was a lot more I wanted to include but I”™ll probably save them for future playlists.

Good evening sir.

There really aren”™t enough hours in the day. I, like so many others, have a day job. A day job that has grown dull and uninspiring. This is part of the reason David and I started Spotisfaction. Yes, For most of my life I have harboured a bit of a hidden love for a bit of the ole hip-hoppity thing. Except for the last 3-4 years, when I have hardly listened to any due to being disillusioned with the whole genre. I have been truly rediscovering an old flame in the last couple of days while I have been compiling this for which I give big props (whatever that means!). It”™s topped and tailed by Public Enemy, who, in my opinion are the greatest rap act of all time. I”™ve tried to let it flow for the most part though you may disagree. It”™s mostly old stuff but with a couple of new discoveries (Daleks, La Rumeur) to modernise it a bit. BDP track is truly awesome and Ya Mama by The Pharcyde is such an infectiously good time call and response track. I remember seeing them perform it on The Word many years back and being blown away. MF Doom plays a big part in the Madvillain and Dangerdoom pieces and is probably my favourite current mc. It”™s Tricky by Run Dmc, truly awesome and broke ground for guitar based backing tracks which popped up many times in the future.

Yes, it”™s me again so you know what you”™re getting. I had a fantastic weekend with fantastic people, but it was not without it”™s down points. Yes, it”™s me again so you know what you”™re getting. I had a fantastic weekend with fantastic people, but it was not without it”™s down points. As such, this playlist is a kind of “Best Of Thom”™s weekend”, only it”™s not as there was so much more awesome music that was kicked about in Spotisfaction towers and indeed out and about. Most of these tracks have some kind of meaning or reason behind me including them today, including:

LCD Soundsystem – Never As Tired As When I”™m Waking Up
I do love this album. This track is a bit of a comfort to me today. Also sums up how I felt this morning trying to get out of bed. Internal soundtrack for the win. Team Win.

This playlist was my attempt at a kind of lo-fi, downtempo mix, book-ended with a few tracks to get the blood flowing again (I hope you got that from the title). A couple of these tracks were inspired by an evening listening to various SomaFM stations, some of them are personal favourites that I just had to find space for, and a couple more were picked almost at random from my “must play these next” list (and shoehorned in as best as I could manage).

M83”™s “Teen Angst” is a wicked track, in my opinion. Someone described them to me as a combination of the best elements of Ulrich Schnauss, Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine, and I”™d say that was a pretty succint way of describing them. This track in particular exudes funk and makes me want to strap on my dancin”™ wellies. Better way to start a playlist? Haven”™t found it yet.

I have a hardon for Telefon Tel Aviv. This track was the very first one I added to the collaborative playlist Thom and I created that sparked the idea and kick-started Spotisfaction. Good times. Good times indeed.

I know a couple of people have submitted playlists with tracks by The Postal Service, so here”™s Jimmy Tamborello (one half of The Postal Service along with Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie) working under the his solo pseudonym, Dntel. Electro-pop? Yes. Good? Very. Start with his album “Life Is Full of Possibilites” if you like this track.

Man, I properly heart The Album Leaf. Not much more to say about this one.

I am going out to buy “The Humbucking Coil” by B. Fleischmann, and I recommend you do the same. “First Times” is little stabby guitar notes in triple time, with perfect organ droning. The rest of the album has been stuck on replay for the whole evening. Annoying, really, when you”™re trying to come up with a playlist and all you want to do is listen to one artist. If that”™s not a good enough recommendation, I don”™t know what is.

When I first heard Jon Hopkin”™s “Light Through The Veins” I got goosebumps. It”™s a heart-warming, almost europhic track and as such was pretty much perfect for the mid-section of the playlist. It”™s basic – just one chord progression for the entire song, but his layering is so subtle that it never gets old. Bliss.

“Pristine Boobies” by Black Mold. Because I have them. Check ”˜em out, I give you permission to grope.

I don”™t think “Not So Fast, You”™re Hurting Me” by I Broke My Robot really fits into this playlist, if I”™m completely honest. Probably a bit too glitchy. I couldn”™t get rid of it, though, cos I smile every time I hear the robotic voice that graces various breaks in this track. Tee hee, robots.

The last track of today”™s playlist, Doctor P, was a recommendation from Rob da Bank”™s Twitter feed. Honestly, I have a lot of love for Mr. da Bank, so anything he recommends is worth a listen as far as I”™m concerned. And, to be honest, I wasn”™t disappointed.

While his mix leans towards funk, dnb and a little grime, I thought I could put together a more two-step compilation, with some breathing space towards experimental and glitch. How do I start this mixlist? Do I choose something very obviously, quintessentially Dubstep, or do I choose something light and popular to ease us in? I wanted to avoid both of those clichÃ©s, and hopefully chose a track, in Martyn”™s ”˜Velvet”™ that not many of you will know, but which mixes some nice tech-house and IDM influences over the Dubstep groove. I hope this one sucks us all in whichever angle we”™re coming from.

A particular highlight on this mixlist for me is the Vex”˜d remix of ”˜Fallen”™ by Distance. This track shattered my soul the first time I heard it, and is so heavy that the theory of relativity breaks down at its centre. I”™m a big fan of anything Planet Mu, and so was delighted to see edIT”™s Laundry on Spotify (just about the only track of his on there).

DZ”™s remix of Boys Noize”™s remix of Feist”™s My Moon, My Man is another special one. The Boys Noize remix is a classic itself, but DZ pull off a fantastic twostep take on what was once a jaunty and beautiful piano ditty. Four bangers to end on with Datsik/Downlink (bear with it, when the Jungle influence kicks in later, the tune really takes off), Distance, Reso (forget coffee, the last minute and a half of Beast In The Basement will keep you going all day), and the uplifting Nero remix of In The Middle by The Streets. Before, during and after a night out, this tune picks me up time and time again, so here”™s hoping it picks you guys up for the rest of today.

This morning could have gone so far south that it would have been wearing one of those hats with corks on. You see, through a series of events I managed to lock myself out of my own house this morning. I didn”™t have a key to get in, and I needed a shower and a change of clothes before I headed to work. As a bboy I couldn”™t really kick off my playlist with anything but The Godfather of Soul. With classic JB drums and horn blasts this tune is so funky it makes me pull my ahhhh face. Bringing the funk bang up to date with The Bamboos, featuring their Tru Thoughts label mate Alice Russel. The album, Rawville, is just a massive chunk of happy that will just make you want to go and dance in the sunshine.

I also wanted to throw in some amazing lyricism, so I”™ve included Roots Manuva, Rakim and Canadian rapper Abdominal. I was lucky enough to catch Abdominal together with DJ Format at uni and he blew me away. Ludicrous breath control, multi-syllabic rhyming and dope flow but what really get”™s me about Abdominal is his ability to draw you in to a story, make you listen to every word and, more often than not, make you laugh as well.

It wouldn”™t be an accurate reflection of my tastes without getting a bit grimey so I”™ve thrown in the few bits of dnb and dubstep I could find on here whilst hopefully keeping up the dancey vibe. Lots of excitement around Noisia at the moment as they are about to (finally) drop their album, Split The Atom, and recently recorded a staggering Essential Mix which takes in everything from their own brand of intricate, crisp, neurofunk, to Daft Punk, Radiohead and even the Bar Kays! The little “diplodocus?” vocal on this track makes me chuckle every time.

Nneka”™s original Heartbeat made me stop in my tracks when I first heard it. Breathtakingly beautiful. Then Chase & Status merked it with some disgustingly heavy guitars. Excellent.

I”™m obsessing slightly over Miike Snow at the moment, the album is just luscious from start to finish. Loving Emalkay”™s work as well so this remix let me kill two birds with one stone.
